This advanced graduate course introduces students to the field of biblical hermeneutics through the critical exploration of five distinct and influential interpretive approaches, as presented in Biblical Hermeneutics: Five Views, edited by Stanley E. Porter and Beth M. Stovell. Designed for theological students, ministry professionals, and academic researchers, the course equips learners with the tools to interpret Scripture faithfully, responsibly, and theologically.

Students will engage deeply with the following five focal areas:

  1. Comparative Hermeneutical Analysis – Evaluate and contrast the Historical-Critical/Grammatical, Literary/Postmodern, Philosophical/Theological, Redemptive-Historical, and Canonical models of interpretation, analyzing their assumptions, methodologies, and theological implications.
  2. Theological and Philosophical Foundations – Explore how theology, tradition, and philosophical presuppositions shape biblical interpretation, drawing insights from figures like Augustine, Gadamer, Ricoeur, and Barth.
  3. Historical and Literary Contextualization – Develop skills to understand Scripture within its original grammatical, historical, and literary frameworks, affirming authorial intent and narrative structure.
  4. Reader, Community, and Canon – Examine the role of the interpretive community, the authority of the biblical canon, and the dynamic engagement of readers across diverse cultural contexts.
